If you’ve received a paycheck by direct deposit or paid a bill online in the United States, you’ve almost certainly used ACH. It’s the backbone of everyday electronic money movement between US bank accounts. This guide explains what ACH is, how an ACH transfer works, how long it takes, and how it’s used to send and receive USD on Krak.
ACH is a US-only network for moving USD between bank accounts. It’s reliable and inexpensive, but it settles in batches on business days rather than instantly.
ACH transfers move as either a credit (a “push,” where the sender’s bank pushes funds to the recipient) or a debit (a “pull,” where a company draws funds from an account with authorization — e.g. a subscription or bill payment).
Krak moves money by ACH credit: paychecks and other deposits are pushed into your account, and when you send USD out, it’s pushed to the recipient’s bank account.
Learn more in our guide, ACH credits vs ACH debits.
To receive an ACH transfer you share two pieces of information:
Routing number: a 9-digit number (also called an ABA routing number) that identifies the bank.
Account number: the number that identifies the specific account at that bank.
On Krak, eligible US users are issued these details for their account so they can receive USD by ACH. You can find them in the app under the receive menu.
ACH settles on business days — Monday to Friday, excluding US federal holidays — so timing depends on when a payment is submitted. A standard ACH transfer usually completes within 1–2 business days. Payments submitted on a weekend or holiday begin processing on the next business day.
Factor | Effect on timing |
|---|---|
Weekends and federal holidays | ACH does not settle on non-business days; processing resumes the next business day. |
Time of submission | Payments have cut-off times; those submitted late in the day may start the next business day. |
First-time or larger payments | May be subject to additional verification or review. |
Receiving bank | The recipient’s bank sets its own posting times. |
On Krak, money you receive by ACH is reflected in your balance and, depending on the payment, may be subject to a short hold before it’s available to spend or withdraw. We’ll show you the status in the app.
Sometimes an ACH transfer can’t be completed — for example, because of incorrect account details or because the receiving bank rejects it. When that happens, the payment is “returned” with a reason code, and the funds move back. If a transfer involving your Krak account is returned, we’ll update your balance and the payment status accordingly.
